What Is a Cloze Deletion Card?

A cloze deletion hides a short piece of text while leaving the surrounding sentence visible. For example, a biology note might say that the mitochondrion produces ATP through oxidative phosphorylation; a cloze card hides the process name and asks you to retrieve it in context. This can be more precise than a question that simply says ‘What happens in a mitochondrion?’ because the sentence supplies the relationship being tested. The hidden phrase should be the smallest meaningful answer, not half a paragraph. If too much is hidden, the card becomes a guessing game rather than recall practice.

The cloze generator uses the same source inputs as the card maker. Paste a few notes, upload a text document, or use readable content from another supported source. Choose how many cards to request, generate, and inspect the resulting deck. A generated blank is a suggestion. Check whether the visible words give away the answer or, at the other extreme, leave several plausible answers. Edit the card when the context needs a clearer subject, unit, date, or contrast.

Build Blanks That Test One Idea

Cloze cards work well for terminology, ordered steps, short formulas that survive plain-text extraction, and precise distinctions between similar concepts. They are less useful when the sentence only repeats a title or when the missing word could be any synonym. A strong cloze asks for something that matters to understanding: a mechanism, condition, or consequence. If a source contains a large table, separate its main relationships into a few readable sentences before expecting useful blanks. Scanned handwriting or diagrams may first need local OCR or visual review; a blank cannot fix a wrong transcription.

In study mode, the missing phrase is shown only after you reveal the answer. You can also use regular flashcards or Quiz for other cards in the same deck. Spaced repetition ratings are available during review, so a cloze that you repeatedly miss can come back sooner. Revise the prompt if difficulty comes from ambiguous wording rather than from a concept you have not learned.

Using Cloze Cards With Anki

The current export menu offers an Anki-importable tab-separated text file alongside CSV, JSON, and plain-text notes. Its Anki file writes ordinary front and back fields. It does not create Anki Cloze note types or preserve the interactive blank as a native Anki cloze automatically. If native Anki cloze is essential, inspect the exported data and convert the note type in Anki yourself. This distinction matters because a file that Anki can import is not necessarily a cloze deck in Anki. Keep the original local deck or export JSON before changing browser data.

Frequently Asked Questions

It hides a selected term or phrase inside a sentence so you recall that answer from the remaining context.

Yes. Review the generated card and edit its wording or answer in the Card Set before studying.

No. The current Anki export is tab-separated front-and-back text. Native Anki Cloze note types require a separate conversion after export.

Yes. A deck can include cloze material alongside ordinary cards, and Auto Mix can use different practice forms.
